God alone is the source of all power. By His power He created
and sustains the universe (see 1 Chronicles 29:11; Jeremiah
10:12). Human power and authority exists and lasts only as
long as God allows, and for His purposes. For example, at
the crucifixion, Jesus said to the Roman governor, Pilate:
"You would have no power over me if it were not given
you from above." (John 19:11).
After his resurrection Jesus told his disciples: "All
authority [KJV: "power"] in heaven and on earth
has been given to me...." (Matthew 28:18).
Jesus Christ has unseen power now, but when he returns his
authority will be seen in all the earth.
"
far above all rule and authority, power and dominion,
and every title that can be given, not only in the present
age but also in the one to come." (Ephesians 1:21).
The power of God, the Holy Spirit, which had supported Jesus,
was then also given to the disciples; and this enabled them
to preach the gospel with strength and conviction, with the
Holy Spirit bearing them witness. (see Acts 1:8).
This same power will in the future be given "
to
him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give
authority [KJV: "power"] over the nations."
(Revelation 2:26)
