The Pharisees were a prominent sect of the Jews, some of whom
opposed the gospel message of Jesus Christ. They had an exaggerated
respect for the Law of Moses, requiring all to observe it
in detail. They clashed with Jesus over keeping the Law, particularly
over keeping the Sabbath day 'holy'.
Their self-professed righteousness was frequently no more
than a cover for pride and greed and indifference to the needs
of others. Jesus said of them: "Woe to you, teachers
of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed
tombs which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside
are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the
same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous
but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."
(Matthew 23:27-28).
We read in Acts 23:8 that, in contrast to the Sadducees, the
Pharisees believed in the coming resurrection of the dead.
This enabled Paul, who was on trial before the Jewish leaders,
to create dissention among them.
