In Bible language 'peace' means more than the absence of wars
and fighting. It is positive and constructive. The Hebrew
word shalom also has the sense of health and completeness.
Wars and fighting come from human weakness, selfishness, envy
and greed (see James 4:1-3). Man cannot make peace among nations
for himself. Peace comes from love between God and man.
Jesus has been given the title 'The Prince of Peace' (in Isaiah
9:6). When he returns to reign over the earth he will bring
and maintain peace forever: "He will proclaim peace to
the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from
the River to the ends of the earth." (Zechariah 9:10).
We can have peace within ourselves now if we live after the
example of Christ. At his birth the angels rejoiced at the
prospect of universal peace, which Jesus would bring: "Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men
."
(Luke 2:14).
"The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect
of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever."
(Isaiah 32:17).
