The Idol Worshipper.
A pagan is one who worships many gods, or one of many, other
than the true God. In Bible times this would include all the
nations of the world except Israel, who worshipped the One
and Only God, Yahweh. God instructed Israel: "You shall
have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself
an idol
." (Exodus 20:3-4).
This was still true in Paul's day. When he visited Athens,
the centre of Greek culture, he was "greatly distressed
to see that the city was full of idols". He addressed
the people of Athens with these words:
"Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very
religious. For as I walked round and looked carefully at your
objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:
TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown
I am going to proclaim to you." (Acts 17:16,22-23).
