Lambs were a common sight in Bible lands. They were inoffensive,
vulnerable and generally obedient to the shepherds who cared
for them. Lambs provided food for the people, and were offered
as sacrifices on the altar.
"This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly
each day: two lambs a year old
." (Exodus 29:38).
The offering of animal sacrifices as part of the worship of
God ended with the coming of Jesus Christ, who himself became
"the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
(John 1:29).
The Book of Revelation records the apostle John seeing a vision
of the future in which the slain lamb represents the risen
Christ who is to rule the world: "Then I looked and heard
the voice of many angels
they sang: 'Worthy is the Lamb,
who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and
strength and honor and glory and praise!'" (Revelation
5:11-12).
