(2) of Christ.
During Jesus' ministry he told his followers, who at that
time were mostly Jews, that there was no need to concern themselves
with the detailed observance of Law through Moses, because:
i) Soon, Moses' Law would have no further authority, and
ii) If they loved God and their fellow men and women as they
went about their daily lives, then they would be doing all
that God and the Law required.
"Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees
got together. One of them, an expert in the Law, tested him
with this question: 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment
in the Law?' Jesus replied: '"Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And
the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself. All
the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.'"
(Matthew 22:34-40).
Jesus saw that these two simple requirements for life, which
we think of as the 'Law of Christ', were in fact part of the
Law, and summarised all the detail of the Law. They are found
in Leviticus 19:18, and Deuteronomy 6:5.
