Obedience is the basis of all agreement between God and man.
The covenant between God and Israel stated: "Now if you
obey Me fully and keep My covenant, then out of all nations
you will be My treasured possession...." (Exodus 19:5;
and see Deuteronomy ch.11). But Israel were continually disobedient
and, true to His covenant, God destroyed them as a nation
and sent them into exile (see Jeremiah 7:22-34; Daniel 9:1-19).
Daniel and all God's prophets understood that it was the purpose
of God that one day not only Israel, but also all nations
would obey Him (see Daniel 7:26-27).
Christians have a personal covenant of willing obedience to
God, following the example of their Lord and Master Jesus
Christ: "Although he was a son, he learned obedience
from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the
source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." (Hebrews
5:8-9).
