People who lived in Bible times connected the directions 'right' and 'left' with right and wrong, good and bad.

"The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left." (Ecclesiastes 10:2).

"All nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from the other as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left." (Matthew 25:32-33).

Jacob named his youngest son Benjamin-'the son of my right hand' (see Genesis 35:18, NIV footnote).
