To be rebellious is to defy and disobey the instructions of
those in authority. In the Bible we read of:
1.
Rebellion of men and women against human authority
Both Peter and Paul instruct Christians to be obedient to
human authority, just as if human authority were specially
appointed by God to look after His affairs on earth (see 1
Peter 2:13-15; Romans 13:1-7). The only exception would be
when to do so would mean disobeying God.
2.
Rebellion of children against parents
A rebellious son who persistently refused to obey his parents,
under the Law of Moses, could be stoned to death (Deuteronomy
21:20-21).
3.
Rebellion of man against God
Concerning Israel, His people, God said to His prophet Ezekiel:
"Son of Man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a
rebellious nation
they and their fathers have been in
revolt against me to this very day." (Ezekiel 2:3).
God
does not tolerate rebellion: "
they [Israel] had
rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel
of the Most High. So He subjected them to bitter labor; they
stumbled, and there was no one to help." (Psalm 107:11-12).
The Prophet Samuel told King Saul: "Rebellion is as the
sin of witchcraft." (1 Samuel 15:23, KJV).
