Bought out of Slavery.
To 'redeem' is to buy back something that was previously your
property, and which has passed into the ownership of another
person. Another similar meaning of the original Hebrew is
to 'set free'. There was a law in Israel which required a
man to buy back or redeem land which had formerly belonged
to one of his family who perhaps through hard times and poverty
had sold his lands to another, and had become a bondsman or
slave to another man. The Book of Ruth in the Old Testament
is written about just such a situation.
The prophets and apostles use this Old Testament law of redemption
to illustrate what God does for us. We are morally and spiritually
poverty stricken and have sold our inheritance, and become
slaves to sin (see Romans 6:15-18), but God has redeemed us
by the death of His Son (see 1 Corinthians 1:30), and will
restore us to our inheritance, and give us a place in His
Kingdom when Christ returns.
