The words 'mission' and 'missionary' are not widely used in
the English Bible, where we usually find the words 'ministry'
and 'minister'. But we often speak, for example, of the apostle
Paul's missionary work and missionary journeys. Missionary
is derived from the Latin equivalent of the Greek word 'apostle'.
They both mean 'one who is sent', and particularly in the
Bible, 'one who is sent' to preach the gospel.
There is one example of the use of the word 'mission' in the
NIV: "When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission,
they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also
called Mark." (Acts 12:25).
