In the Bible Michael is mentioned in the books of Daniel,
Jude and Revelation. The name means 'Who (is) Like God?' and
could be a title given to more than one of God's representatives.
The angel who was speaking to Daniel told him that Michael
had come to his assistance in his contention with the king
of Persia (see Daniel 10:13,21). In the time of Daniel the
prophet, Michael the Archangel also helped the Israelites
who were rebuilding Jerusalem, by contending with those who
were trying to hinder the work (referred to in Jude 9).
Michael the Great Prince will again deliver God's people,
and establish them in the land, subduing their enemies (see
Daniel 12:1; Revelation 12:7). This may be a reference to
the Lord Jesus Christ and the work he will do when he returns
to the earth.
(See ARCHANGEL).
