One who Cares for God's Flock.
Anyone who serves God by caring for His people is a minister.
The Bible speaks of several kinds of ministers:
1.
The priests in the Old Testament
These ministered to God in the Tabernacle and the Temple on
behalf of God's people (see Deuteronomy 18:1-5).
2.
The angels
These are described as God's ministers who look after His
creation (see Psalm 103:20-21; Hebrews 1:13-14).
3.
Jesus Christ and the apostles
Jesus is, and the apostles were, ministers of the gospel (see
Ephesians 3:7; Colossians 1:7).
4.
The civil authorities
In a slightly different way human rulers are said to be "God's
ministers" because they maintain order in God's world
(Romans 13:6, KJV). But this does not mean they are necessarily
righteous before God.
In the organisation of the early Church the ministers, sometimes
called deacons, looked after practical matters, while the
bishops took the lead, particularly in the spiritual welfare
of the Church. The example of Christ is that we should all
be prepared to serve in the lowest capacity, which is just
as important as leadership. Jesus washed the disciples' feet,
saying: "Whosoever will be great among you, let him be
your minister
the Son of Man came not to be ministered
unto, but to minister." (Matthew 20:26-28, KJV).
