MARY
M

The Virgin Mother of Christ.

Mary was the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ, chosen by God, His Father, to bear His son. Mary was a direct descendant of the royal house of David (see Luke 3:23-38), and so was properly entitled to be the mother of the Messiah, the one who would sit on the throne of his father David. She displayed great faith and understanding of the responsibility given to her. She does not have a prominent part in the later ministry of the Lord Jesus, but in the Gospels we are aware of her presence in the background. In his dying moments Jesus asks the beloved disciple, probably John, to take care of his mother, which may indicate that Joseph, her husband, was no longer alive:

"When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, 'Dear woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.' From that time on, this disciple took her into his home." (John 19:26-27).

There are other Marys mentioned in the Gospels:
Mary Magdalene had been cured of some infirmity by Jesus (see Luke 8:2), and then devoted her life to his service. She followed him to his crucifixion, and helped to prepare his body for burial. She was the first to discover that the Lord was risen from the dead, and the first to meet him after his resurrection. Jesus made Mary the bearer of this good news to his disciples: "…go to my brethren, and say unto them, 'I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.' Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her." (John 20:17-18, KJV).

Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, who was raised from the dead (see John ch.11) brought a box of expensive ointment and poured it over the head and feet of Jesus as he sat with them. It appears that she alone understood that Jesus was about to die. When the disciples, notably Judas, complained at what seemed to them a waste of money, Jesus replied: "Leave her alone… why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." (Mark 14:6-9).

Two of Jesus' disciples had mothers named Mary. Mary the mother of James ministered to Jesus in his life time. With Mary Magdalene she followed Jesus to his crucifixion, and together they bought sweet spices to anoint his body. But they were not needed-Jesus had risen from the dead. (see Mark 15:40-16:6).

It is recorded in Acts 12:12 that John Mark also had a mother called Mary. Nothing is known of her except that her house was used as a meeting place by the apostles.
