5. The Holy Spirit given to the apostles.

After his death and resurrection, Jesus gave his disciples the ability to work with the Holy Spirit, as he had done: "In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit…. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." (Acts 1:5; 2:1-4).

The Holy Spirit was later given to other followers of Jesus in the same way that it had been given to the apostles. Cornelius is an example (in Acts 10:44-46). The Holy Spirit could be passed on to others by the laying on of the apostles' hands (see Acts 8:18-20).

God's purpose with the Spirit in New Testament times was to strengthen the apostles as they gave witness to the gospel message, and to enable them to recollect the words that Jesus had spoken to them: "The Counselor, The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26).
