One Sent by God.
This is the title given to the twelve disciples of the Lord
Jesus when the work of preaching the gospel began, and to
Matthias, the replacement for Judas Iscariot, and later also
to Paul.
"When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where
they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and
Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James
the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas son of
James
. Then they prayed, 'Lord, you know everyone's
heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take
over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where
he belongs.' Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias;
so he was added to the eleven apostles." (Acts 1:13-14,
24-26).
"
and last of all he (Christ) appeared to me also,
as to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the apostles
and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I
persecuted the church of God." (1 Corinthians 15:8-9).
"And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an
apostle-I am telling the truth, I am not lying-and a teacher
of the true faith to the Gentiles." (1 Timothy 2:7).
The word means 'one sent' and is so used by Jesus in John's
Gospel: "No servant is greater than his master nor is
a messenger greater than the one who sent him." (John
13:16). In the same sense the writer to the Hebrews refers
to Jesus as one who was sent by God: "the apostle and
high priest whom we confess." (Hebrews 3:1).
