they were the appointed elders of the Christian churches,
who were responsible for God's work; as in the two following
examples, firstly where Paul is instructing Timothy about
church discipline, and secondly, where Jesus Christ after
his resurrection, is giving messages to those in charge of
the churches of Asia:
"I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and
the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality."
(1 Timothy 5:21).
