Darkness,
in the Bible, when it does not refer literally to lack of
light, as in the plagues of Egypt (Exodus 10:21-29), frequently
refers to ignorance, particularly unwillingness to know about
God and His ways. Isaiah the prophet said concerning Jesus,
who would come to bring the knowledge of God to all people:
"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light
has dawned." (Isaiah 9:2).
"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory
of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises
upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come
to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn."
(Isaiah 60:1-3).
