The return of Jesus Christ as King is the beginning of the
final phase of God's purpose with the earth. It will involve
the destruction of all that offends and opposes God, and the
resurrection of the faithful and the restoration of the earth
and the blessing of all mankind. It was foreseen by the prophets
(see Psalm 72; Zechariah 14:9). It is the message of the gospel
and the hope and encouragement of all Christians (see Luke
4:43). In the original Greek in the New Testament the coming
of Christ is described by the word parousia which is the return
of a conqueror in triumphant procession.
"Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming
.
You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming
is near." (James 5:7-8).
