God's Only Begotten Son, His Anointed Priest and King.
Christ is the Greek word for the Hebrew title of 'Messiah'
given to Jesus, the Son of God. Both words mean the 'anointed
one'. The title had previously been conferred upon Cyrus the
Persian, because God, in a different age and circumstances,
gave Cyrus the task of saving His People (in Isaiah 45). (See
ANOINTING).
The title, conferred on Jesus, is descriptive of the status
and authority of the one who is to be crowned king of the
future age. The writer to the Hebrews refers to the anointing
of Jesus, quoting from Psalm 45: "Your throne, O God,
will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the
scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and
hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above
your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."
(Hebrews 1:8-9).
