The languages in which the Bible is written distinguish between three meanings of the word 'world':

1. The physical world
"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." (Psalm 24:1).

2. Civilization
"I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." (John 12:46).

3. This world, or age
Christ has been given "every title that can be given, not only in the present age [KJV: "world"] but also in the one to come." (Ephesians 1:21).
