Without water all creatures would die. Israel in the wilderness found themselves without water and were resigned to death, but God by a miracle made water spring from a rock and the people of Israel were saved (in Numbers 20:1-13). The apostle Paul refers to this incident: "For they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ." (1 Corinthians 10:4).

Water is the symbol of the teaching and example of Christ, which we need to drink continually to keep us alive spiritually. Jesus replied to the woman at the well of Samaria: "Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14).

God invites us through the prophet Isaiah: "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live." (Isaiah 55:1-3).
