Given Life.
To 'beget' is the old English word meaning 'to be the father
of'. In the KJV 'begat' is found in the genealogy of Christ
in the first chapter of Matthew's Gospel and elsewhere. In
modern versions this has been changed to read 'was the father
of'. The only begotten Son of God refers to the Lord Jesus
Christ. "He [God] gave His only begotten Son
."
(John 3:16, KJV). The NIV reads "He gave His one and
only Son".
This special begettal and birth of Jesus Christ is explained
by Luke: "The angel answered [Mary], 'The Holy Spirit
will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow
you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of
God.'" (Luke 1:35).
In the Book of Revelation, Jesus Christ is also referred to
as: "the first begotten [first born] of the dead."
(Revelation 1:5, KJV), meaning that Jesus Christ was the first
man to be raised from the dead to inherit eternal life. John
tells us that as Jesus was the Son of God, so we also can
become the 'children of God'.
"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in
his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children
born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's
will, but born of God." (John 1:12-13).
And the apostle Paul writes: "For those God foreknew
He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His
Son, that he [Christ] might be the firstborn among many brothers."
(Romans 8:29).
