(2) The New Creation in Christ.
The same is true in the New Testament, where, on nine occasions
the 'beginning' can be seen from the context to refer to the
creation of the world. For example "
at the beginning
the Creator 'made them male and female.'" (Matthew 19:4).
But more frequently (at least thirty times) it may possibly
be seen from the context to refer to the beginning of the
preaching of the gospel, for example: "In the beginning
was the Word
" (John 1:1).
"Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things
that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed
down to us by those who from the first [KJV: "from the
beginning"] were eyewitnesses and servants of the word."
(Luke 1:1-2).
The same Greek word arche, usually translated 'beginning',
can also mean 'first' or 'ruling', (for example as in the
word 'archangel', which means the first or senior angel).
