A Person Devoted to God.
A Nazarite, or Nazirite, was a man or woman of Israel who
had made a special vow of service to God. When the vow had
been made, a man:
1) Did not cut his hair, or shave his beard.
2) Did not drink wine or eat grapes or raisins.
3) Was not allowed to touch a dead body, even that of a close
relative
(see Numbers ch.6).
Samson was a Nazirite (see Judges 13:7), as also was the prophet
Samuel, whom we read was 'lent to God' as a child (in 1 Samuel
1:28).
John the Baptist was also probably a Nazirite (see Matthew
3:4).
Nazirite is not to be confused with 'Nazarene' (q.v.).
